Re: “Back in Gear: The Bike Ranch

Usually I'm skeptical of variances, but this seems like a great idea. Anything that saves that area for cycling is a good idea. It's a treasure in Pima County and unique to the area.
Thousands of homes are being built just a few miles south of there and nobody is talking about the environmental destruction from those new housing developments plus the thousands of additional cars on Old Spanish Trail every day.

Re: “Detained Desert View Student Told Deputy He Was Undocumented

So despite lack of license, registration, insurance, he's still driving? What a country! Back to wherever you come from and try the legal way.

Re: “Gov. Ducey Signs Texting and Driving Ban

Fantastic news. Hopefully we'll see fewer navel gazers driving down the road.

Re: “Danehy

The Democrats could do something about immigration. They could make sensible reductions in legal immigration. They could pass legislation making E-Verify mandatory to punish employers who scoff at the law and who hire cheap illegal workers instead of raising wages and hiring poor and working class Americans.
But no, they'll revel in identity politics, advocate socialism and open borders, collect campaign contributions from cheap labor industries, and lose big in 2020.
That's unfortunate, especially for the few things my party gets right these days like addressing climate change.

Re: “In Which I Disagree With Mark Stegeman (And Not, I Should Add, Respectfully)

"Our schools should be helping students grow as people at the same time they learn facts and skills."

I respectfully disagree that school is really for this. Plus it almost never happens in any meaningful way and the destructive effects of mediocre and poor teachers, added on to the basically impersonal nature of the institution itself, typically negate any benefits of the few great teachers that manage to transcend the institution. The institution is designed to use reward, punishment, and authority and most classes function that way. it's a rare teacher that will have their authority questioned or genuinely want a child's opinion. Plus one year of a great teacher is simply too little time to make any lasting effect on the vast majority of children.
Teachers can be positive role models, but we should focus on the only real place for emotional connection and learning: the family.

On the flags issue, why not hang those flags? Tohono and Pasqua students attend TUSD, they are sovereign nations and this is their historic land.

Re: “Kamala Harris Wants To Raise Teachers' Salaries

"The best thing about the Green New Deal is people are forced to talk about climate change" -- nailed it.
I read a study showing something like 75% of people believe climate change is a problem. But only about 30% would pay $10 a month to do anything about it.
Sometimes I lose my faith in humanity just a little bit.
