Re: “Here's Why Democrat Mark Kelly Could Knock Appointed Sen. Martha McSally out of Her Orbit

Silly McMartha should take comfort in Mark Kelly's announcement. In the near future she will have all the time in the world to go hiking. I was hoping she would take a hike after losing in 2018, but instead, our wise-guy Governor gave her the booby prize. She's just not really cut out to be an elected official.

Re: “A Terrible Beauty

There is indeed beauty to be found in mining landscapes and mining communities. Head frames, concentrators, smelter stacks and change rooms make great subjects for photographers and painters, but there is a terrible price to be paid - especially for open pit mining. Open pits destroyed long-established neighborhoods (most of Lowell, all of Upper Lowell, Jiggerville, the Johnson Addition, Germantown and Cowan Ridge) that made up 1/3 of Bisbee, the entire towns of old Morenci, Metcalf, and Ray, many old established neighborhoods in Butte, MT and ironically, a beautiful plaza and the rest of a planned community in Tyrone, NM. Open pit mining leaves horribly ugly gaping wounds in the earth that will never be healed. Each time I drive down State Route 83 between Sonoita and I-10 in either direction, I think about how such a hideous, gaping wound might well soon scar the Santa Ritas. Margaret Regan is absolutely correct in her observations about the ill treatment of mining and milling workers by the copper companies - the copper bosses conceded nothing in the way of wages and benefits (and equal treatment of workers of color) without a hard fight and did their utmost to destroy unions and crush dissent in their corporate fiefdoms.

Re: “Danehy

Hate to tell you Tom, but some German-Americans and Italian Americans WERE interned or imprisoned during WWII for seditious and treasonable acts - i.e., active participation in the German-American Bund, Silver Shirt Legions of America and other fascist groups that supported Hitler and Mussolini. The number was small. You are correct if you mean that there was no wholesale roundup of German-Americans and Italian-Americans, as there was of Japanese Americans in the Western Defense Zone. Dwight Eisenhower, Carl Spaatz and Chester Nimitz weren't interned. Nor were all German and Italian "enemy aliens" rounded up. Joe DiMaggio's parents weren't naturalized before the war, and the only penalty they, as enemy aliens, faced, was that they were excluded from the coastline and other :sensitive" areas.

Re: “Meet Your Candidates: GOP Congressional Hopeful Brandon Martin Hopes to End Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid

Someone has been chug-a-lugging the grape Kool-Aid. The scary thing is that he could end up winning a seat in Congress.

Re: “Rural Revival

Clifton is an architectural treasure, an unvarnished piece of old Arizona that possesses a fascinating history of strikes, floods and vibrant community life. Morenci is an ugly, bleak place, a lunar landscape that looks like a cross between a military base and a prison. Old Morenci looked much like Clifton and Bisbee, but was destroyed when the pit was expanded.

Re: “After Her Immigration Bill Fails, McSally Crows That It "Nearly" Passed

Take a hike, Martha. All the way out of the state. And don't come back.

Re: “Sean Miller Denies ESPN Report on $100,000 Discussion

Greg Hansen is a self-important gas bag and conscienceless hypocrite . Last Saturday he announced in his column
"Miller cannot be allowed to coach the Wildcats again. Not Saturday at Oregon. Not ever.
"The school should withdraw from the PAC-12 Tournament and notify the NCAA that it will not participate in the tournament.
"Millers coaching career is surely at an end."
Today, in his column, he writes glowingly about the Wildcats and talks about coach Miller as if the above comments were never made. No admission of making a mistake or rushing to judgment. Amazing.
