Re: “Danehy

Hate to tell you Tom, but some German-Americans and Italian Americans WERE interned or imprisoned during WWII for seditious and treasonable acts - i.e., active participation in the German-American Bund, Silver Shirt Legions of America and other fascist groups that supported Hitler and Mussolini. The number was small. You are correct if you mean that there was no wholesale roundup of German-Americans and Italian-Americans, as there was of Japanese Americans in the Western Defense Zone. Dwight Eisenhower, Carl Spaatz and Chester Nimitz weren't interned. Nor were all German and Italian "enemy aliens" rounded up. Joe DiMaggio's parents weren't naturalized before the war, and the only penalty they, as enemy aliens, faced, was that they were excluded from the coastline and other :sensitive" areas.

Re: “Meet Your Candidates: GOP Congressional Hopeful Brandon Martin Hopes to End Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid

Someone has been chug-a-lugging the grape Kool-Aid. The scary thing is that he could end up winning a seat in Congress.

Re: “Rural Revival

Clifton is an architectural treasure, an unvarnished piece of old Arizona that possesses a fascinating history of strikes, floods and vibrant community life. Morenci is an ugly, bleak place, a lunar landscape that looks like a cross between a military base and a prison. Old Morenci looked much like Clifton and Bisbee, but was destroyed when the pit was expanded.

Take a hike, Martha. All the way out of the state. And don't come back.

Re: “Sean Miller Denies ESPN Report on $100,000 Discussion

Greg Hansen is a self-important gas bag and conscienceless hypocrite . Last Saturday he announced in his column
"Miller cannot be allowed to coach the Wildcats again. Not Saturday at Oregon. Not ever.
"The school should withdraw from the PAC-12 Tournament and notify the NCAA that it will not participate in the tournament.
"Millers coaching career is surely at an end."
Today, in his column, he writes glowingly about the Wildcats and talks about coach Miller as if the above comments were never made. No admission of making a mistake or rushing to judgment. Amazing.

Re: “The Skinny

There's a story floating around Cochise County that Martha McSilly voted to get rid of the 35th Army Band (a superb band of professional musicians) at Fort Huachuca because they wouldn't let her sing the National Anthem, as she is wont to do. Check it out, Weekly staff. If it's true, the pettiness and vindictiveness needs to be shown to Arizona voters. If the story has no foundation, there's nothing lost for anyone. My opinion is that she's just another narcissist who dresses up in a flight suit because it;s the only card she has to play. We miss Gabby - who truly cared about her constituents. Martha clearly cares about Martha.

Re: “Mexican American Studies: What's Next?

The actions of Horne, Huppenthal and the other white reactionaries to kill the MAS program in AZ were a blatant effort to suppress the truth. Killing MAS was part of their overall mission to promote the far-right mythology of American exceptionalism. To them Horne and Huppenthal telling school children the truth about how Mexicans and Mexican-Americans were treated was "promoting resentment towards a race or class," Using their logic, teaching about America's ethnic cleansing policies towards Indians, the enslavement of African Americans and the enforcement of Jim Crow laws and customs throughout the country, the rounding up of law-abiding Issei and Nisei Japanese, attacks on freedom of speech during World War I and the early 1920s and the insanity of the McCarthy era with hunts would all be "promoting resentment towards a race or class." Right-wingers can't accept the truth about the myth of American exceptionalism. Empowering children enrolled in MAS classes did NOT turn them into American-haters. It merely taught them that we have a long way to go to meet our ideals and they have a lot of work to do to turn myth into reality.

Why it took so long to acknowledge for the courts to acknowledge that the anti-MAS law was blatantly racist is what is so surprising.
