I was there that Friday night as well. My Grade 11 classes ended earlier that day. Joe Cocker was awesome. The Don Ellis Orchestra blew everyone away. Do you recall tina Turner climbing down a ladder into the pit in front of the stage?
The act that blew me away was Spirit, a Valley favorite. I had seen them a couple of times, but NEVER sounding that HUGE!
We joined the throngs walking out of what was clearly Jimi's worst night on stage. He was reeling from a major drug bust in Canada the night before and clearly wasn't in the mood to play.
This was the 2nd "Newport" at the Devonshire Downs. The first was June '67. I was 15 and walked out a different kid after seeing Country Joe and the Fish and the Jefferson Airplane.

Watch "Flor De Muertos" in it's entirety. It offers a peek at this wonderful mind.
