Re: “A Streetcar Named Development

One only has to look at San Francisco's Market Street Railway Project and historic streetcars downtown, on the Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf areas -- HUGE attactions to these areas to locals and visitors. That work came out of YEARS of lobbying, planning and grass-roots activism. I know -- I worked as both volunteer and Board Member with MSR when we dreamed about the possibilities.

Keep going, Tucson. You will find the way and means to get to your destination. Streetcars were taken from us by GM, Firestone Tire & Rubber and Standard Oil in a huge conspiracy from the 1950's until stopped by the U.S. Government in the late '60's. The return of streetcars represents the will of the people -- not GM and their criminal cohorts!

A modern light rail system is a huge investment -- one can argue the chicken-or-egg syndrome of investment vs. land use and economic activity, but in the end, the result is positive.

What a shame we allowed light rail systems to be removed from many of our cities just so GM could sell buses & parts, Firestone could sell tires, Standard Oil could sell fuels and lubricants. Remember "National City Lines"?

I, for one, am happy to see GM as we knew it die -- painfully! (Unfortunately at taxpayer expense!)
