David, I probably should have said that education is primarily about teaching facts and skills. Socialization is an important part, and one of the main arguments for preserving the traditional districts is the advantage students gain from interacting with students from a wide range of backgrounds.
TUSD removed seven book titles from classrooms, as part of its effort to show compliance with the state's directive to end the MAS courses. (Incidentally, the TUSD board never authorized the book removal and I personally disagreed with it, though I did vote to end the courses.) "The Devil's Highway" was not one of those titles.
One difference between the Star's education reporting and this education reporting is that the Star will usually call for comment or offer a chance to respond, before speculating on board members' motives.
Concerning Pedicone's departure: He knew me well before he signed his contract extension in August 2012, and I did not change over the next few months. What changed, in the November 2012 election, was two seats on the board. That is the reality, however anyone chooses to frame it.
Judging a newly elected official based on one journalist's account of one (fairly minor) incident after interviewing one bartender does not make sense. Rachael has already shown in many ways that she cares much about students and parents. Let us wait and see how she performs on the board. I think this year in TUSD will be different in a way that most people will like.
