    Plants could well help with the recycling of water, CO2 and other materials. But the plants wouldn't need to rely on recycled water at a polar base.

    Chandrayaan 1's Mini Sar radar has found what seem to be sheets of relatively pure water ice at least two meters thick. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/Mini-RF/…

    The ice could be used to supplement the CELSS the astronauts rely on.
