What about underpaid Arizona teachers who are struggling to pay off student loans? Does Kavanagh propose lowering education levels for them? That would probably be simpler than raising salaries of educators, eh?

As a parent, I see TUSD and poverty as contributors to this problem. I agree with Dr. Stegeman that high expectations must be set and school leaders need to understand that setting the bar high is the best way to overcome poverty. I've seen this in my daughter's schools--children from all economic backgrounds were in these schools, and if standards were set low, the students rose to that level. If teachers set high expectations, the kids rose up and generally respected these teachers more. I understand that special resources are needed for students who have language and skill problems, but we need to focus on how to overcome this vs. pull down other students.

I tried to visit Caffe Milano on Saturday evening at 8:45 p.m. and they told me they were closing, even though their sign says they are open until 9:30 p.m.! I wish downtown restaurants would stay open, especially on Second Saturdays!

I'd assume Rothschild gets about 20% of the Republican vote.

The City garbage service works just fine and the fee is fair. I don't think my neighbors want to smell the garbage generated by my family of four plus two dogs and two cats for two weeks, especially during the prime summer baking season.

Jonathan will be our next "strong" mayor. He really knows how to work with groups and get things done.

Regarding the cheers and shouts at the memorial service, maybe we all needed a way to celebrate the bright spots that we have in our community; maybe we needed an expression of hope; maybe the pundits just don't understand.
