What a crock! Not sure where this reviewers head space was at, but the play that I saw at the Rogue theater was, in my opinion, an artistic achievement. The Grapes of Wrath is a very complex story... discerning who is the protagonist is an art-form unto itself. Translating this complex story on a stage with bare minimal props - from the dust bowl, along the highway and eventually to the fields of California is no easy feat. All the little attention to detail in the staging of the actors, including the flow and movement which propelled the story-line, added to the tapestry of enveloping us into the story of the Joad's struggles. As for the actors and their performance, it was superb. Each actor was able to draw me into the character that they were portraying seamlessly. Reviewers themselves have to take in account their own limitations, especially their own expectations. Sherilyn arrived at this venue with expectations and pencil in hand, and from her review, a limited perception... I arrived with no expectations and was immensely entertained... my hat is off to the Rogue Theater and their production...
A grimm review for sure and one that misses the point. In the xenophobic, jingoistic times we live in, Moores film reminds us what we have lost... as for the flag, that's just a symbolic visual image to refer back to where we need to resurrect these ideals -the good ol'

The US Border Patrol is a paramilitary organization that flaunts civilian law at every chance they get. I've watched them use the rural roads in Arizona for over 14 years as their own private drag strip and raceway. Four times I've been detained for over an hour for just this same exercising of my rights (I'm white, by the way)... they lie to justify their own positions (which is why I video EVERY encounter I have with this agency) They actively use bullying tactics whenever someone calls their policies in question ... this attitude eventually surfaces every time with a paramilitary organization... other paramilitary organizations of note: Hitler's SS, Mussolini's Brown Shirts and Mao's Red Guard... they all started as fairly benign organizations but as paranoia is enhanced by government agendas and tactics, they became the fanatical groups that killed millions of people... is this a precursor? These checkpoints are thirty to forty miles away from ANY border... welcome to the new Palestine!!!!
Yes, I agree with you for removing the movie times from your pages... it was only a minor public service to your readers and who needs those pesky little things in our lives that make life easier... it's just not the corporate way... and you are a corporation after all, right... As far as the editors reasoning that everyone has a data plan on their smart phone, or you can go on the internet...perhaps on your side of town. I must start carrying my laptop with me rather than the Tucson Weekly whenever I'm traveling around town and try to find a hot-spot that I can link up to... actually I tried that last night and after 15 minutes of trying to get connected I said screw it. I know, I know... it's just the movie times, no big deal, right?
