"Ethnic studies" sounds benign and open-minded when taken out of context. However, kids are supposed to be learning U.S. and world history in high school so that they are prepared for college and adult life in the U.S. "Ethnic studies" normally occur in college. If we were talking about interesting alternative courses kids could take in addition to their core requirements, fine. As long as they're getting a good, solid education first - which isn't happening here in AZ, and my lifelong acquaintance (father of one of my best friends) Tom Horne knows it and has been fighting to change that, successfully, for decades. We've recently slid back to the bottom because education funding was decimated when our Republican state legislature identified public education as a prime budget item to be slashed by 40%. Using our scan education funds to give kids education on Mexican history INSTEAD OF U.S. or Arizona history, is fundamentally stupid and the kind of partisan, insular, extremist move that has been impoverishing the quality of public education for decades! Let them take ethnic studies in college, or after their basic requirements to graduate are being met. It is a political protest act in itself to offer these classes in the place of core U.S., world, and Arizona history.
