Re: “Friday Roundtable: The State Budget, The Weekly Endorsements In the City Election & More!

What is going on with the Tucson Weekly (TW)?

Lately they have been acting more like a mainstream, conservative newspaper than a progressive, alternative weekly.

The endorsement of a Sonoran Dog over Karin Uhlich is puzzling and a bit disturbing. But, I guess to be “balanced”, and not appear to be shifting too far to the right, they endorse Richard Fimbres.

Yep, Fimbres. Guy who still has Sherriff Dupnick as the co-treasure of his campaign even after he still has not apologized for his racist comments about too many “illegals” in our public schools.

What? How does this work? Let’s try and unravel this together, shall we?

Fmibres is the guy who is very connected to Dan Eckstrom, the conservative, political boss in Tucson who was very tight with former City Manager Mike Hein.

The progressive majority on the City Council fire Mr. Hein who was in the pocket of Eckstrom, big development money, etc.

Mike Hein, also a buddy of Nintzel and Danehey, goes back to Marana or Oro Valley (wherever he is from) to be a full time loose cannon and can’t get a job because of his other, reckless “boy” habits.

Check…. You writing this down?

As a result, Danehey begins to write all of these disparaging features on Regina Romero and Karin Uhlich does not get endorsed by the TW.

Nitzel’s excuse? Karin doesn’t do more to raise the Sun Tran bus fares.

Oh, ok… I think I get this. Karin is not sticking it to the working poor enough to get at TW endorsement?

And the Boys (and I do mean the BOYS) at the Weekly call this “balanced journalism”.

Most people think they are supposed to be a progressive paper.

Guys, if we want “balanced” we can always turn to Fox News.

One more thing..

Last Friday, Inside Tucson Business (ITB) made almost identical endorsements made by the TW.

That alone is weird. But wait, there is more.

In these endorsements, ITB sheepishly mentions the work Karin has done in support of small businesses through Local First Arizona and her social justice work fighting predatory lending.

Wow. IBT does more to point to Karin’s progressive work than TW? Huh? WTF?

There you have it. That is what is going on with the Tucson Weekly-- our loveable, little, alternative paper that once was progressive.
