20 Feet From Stardom

There have been a lot of heavy documentaries lately, so here’s one you can just watch—and more important, listen to—and thoroughly enjoy. Like the decade-old Standing in the Shadows of Motown, 20 Feet from Stardom shines much-needed light on the essential personnel making classic music who never get recognition. Standing in the Shadows was about the house band on the vast majority of Motown records, and 20 Feet gives background singers a solo. From Darlene Love (enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two years ago) to big, powerful voices like Lisa Fischer, Merry Clayton and Claudia Lennear, the film fills out the picture on some of the greatest songs of all time. Stars like Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen and Sting praise not just these singers but the lost art of backing vocals as a whole. An absolute treat.
