The latest Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee ad in Congressional District 1 takes aim at GOP candidate Andy Tobin on the topic of education, focusing on the enormous cuts to education in Arizona since Jan Brewer became governor in 2009.
It's a theme that the DCCC has been pushing since Tobin was finally able to declare a victory over rancher Gary Kiehne in CD1 last week. As The Range has noted, Tobin came out of the primary with a significant financial disadvantage to incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick.
But Tobin's allies have been active in the district as well. The National Republican Congressional Committee is up with an ad that hit Kirkpatrick on her support for the Affordable Care Act and her vote to raise the debt ceiling and the American Action Network is promising to spend a million dollars against Kirkpatrick next month.
Meanwhile, Tobin has released a poll that shows him with an 8-point lead over Kirkpatrick.
The survey, by the Tarrance Group, shows Tobin with 51 percent of the vote and Kirkpatrick with just 43 percent.
“The data speaks for itself: Ann Kirkpatrick’s record has caught up to her, and voters in Arizona’s First Congressional District are looking for a new voice to represent them in Congress,” said Tobin campaign manager Bill Cortese. “Arizonans clearly see Kirkpatrick as part of the problem in Washington and are looking to Andy Tobin for a fresh start.”
Team Kirkpatrick spokesman DB Mitchell threw cold water on the survey.
"This poll is a statistical joke," Mitchell said. "Native Americans make up nearly 25 percent of the district's population, but only 6 percent of the poll's respondents. It was clearly rigged to prop up Tobin, which isn't surprising given the bogus push polls that were used against Ann back in 2012—and we all know how that turned out."
