Cinema Showdown: Smaug and Robert Ford Edition

Mid-World revelers, it’s time to rejoice! On December 12, gather your brethren, hop in your ride, pop in some Led Zep and head on over to either Century Park Place, 5870 E. Broadway Blvd, or Century El Con, 3601 E. Broadway Blvd, for The Hobbit 3D double feature! Starting at 9 p.m., you can check out 2012’s The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey and the premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. If you like a little mayhem with your yuletide, look no further than the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd. On Friday the 13th, the theater is throwing their annual terror-fest The All-Nite Scream-O-Rama; but with a holiday twist this time around. Seven sicko seasonal films, including Black Christmas, Gremlins, and Christmas Evil are playing from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. Do YOU have what it takes to make it through these Santa slashers? Make sure to try the “Dead Nog” specials! Tickets are $13, $15 day of the show, and $12 for Loft members.

Who doesn’t like to unwrap gifts? I can tell you for certain Tucson’s own Black Cherry Burlesque have no problem with, um, unwrapping. That’s exactly what they’ll be doing at the Loft on December 14, at 7:00 p.m. The tantalizing troupe are putting on a live performance before a screening of Bettie Page Reveals All, a brand new documentary on the ultimate pin-up model and fashion icon. Local clothing boutique Razorz Edge will be holding a free raffle as well.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, the 2007 Oscar-nominated, poetic western starring Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard and Sam Rockwell, has been making the the theater rounds recently. It’s the first of many films that New York’s Museum of the Moving Image is planning on bringing to the big screen for the second time around. Masterfully shot by the Coen brothers go-to cinematographer Roger Deakins, The Assassination of… is a must-see on a screen far bigger than your TV. If experimental cinema is more your thing, Exploded View has you covered. The new downtown microcinema, located at 197 E. Toole Ave., presents Animation Explosion! on December 18 at 7:30 p.m. Expect oodles of experimental doodles from around the world, including shorts from Exploded View’s artist-in-residence, local artist Noah Saterstrom.
