The House Majority PAC, a Super PAC dedicated to supporting Democratic candidates, is planning on spending $340,000 on TV ads over three weeks in the congressional race between Democrat Ron Barber and Republican Jesse Kelly.
The June 12 special election will determine who will finish Gabrielle Giffords’ congressional term.
The ads will start running this Friday, May 11, according to Andy Stone, spokesman with the House Majority PAC.
The ads will focus on statements that Kelly has made in the past, including his calls to eliminate, privatize and phase out Social Security and Medicare, according to Stone. Last week, Kelly sought to distance himself from those positions.
The House Majority PAC ad buy comes on top of the nearly half-million dollars that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has committed to spending between now and Election Day.
The National Republican Campaign Committee set aside $300,000 for the race so far, as well as additional dollars to help Kelly run a commercial from his own campaign.
Early voting in the special election begins on Thursday, May 17.
