Mark Kelly, the husband of stricken Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, suggested in the wake of her shooting that people who wanted to help should consider donating to the Community Food Bank or the Southern Arizona chapter of the American Red Cross.

That's opened a floodgate of contributions to the Community Food Bank. Jack Parris, the food bank's public-relations manager, says the organization has already received $75,000 for a fund that bears Giffords' name.

At some point in the (hopefully near) future, the food bank will give Giffords and Kelly a chance to designate how they'd like the money to help, said Parris.

If you would like to get in on the donations, contact the Community Food Bank:

The Gabriel Zimmerman Scholarship Fund has raised slightly more than $10,000, said fund co-creator Jonathan Klein, a UC Santa Cruz alum and San Francisco attorney.

After discovering Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ outreach director Gabriel Zimmerman, a UCSC alum, was killed in the Jan. 8 shooting, Klein said the first thing that came to his head was that he should start a UCSC scholarship fund in Zimmerman’s name.

Klein started the fund alongside Joop Rubens, associate director of development for Social Sciences at UC Santa Cruz.

“We have been flooded by phone calls and e-mails. There were a tremendous amount of people who either knew Gabe or were touched by his passing,” Rubens said. “He was doing such great things with his life.”

Rubens said he is optimistic the scholarship fund will reach the $50,000 needed for the fund to be endowed.

“We want to be able to give this every year,” Rubens said.
