While Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords remains the ICU unit at University Medical Center following Saturday’s shooting, her staff reopened her office yesterday to continue doing work for the constituents of Congressional District 8.

“We had a lot of people come by today with tears in their eyes and condolences and wanting to write messages or say that they were thinking of us and the congresswoman,” says spokesman C.J. Karamargin.

He said that staffers and interns were joined by former staffers and interns—some 40 people in all—for yesterday’s national moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of Saturday’s shooting.

“It helps to bear with the grief of it all,” Karamargin says. “It was important for us not only to behave as if things are going on as normal, but to also to send a message that, essentially, ‘You ain’t gonna intimidate us.’”
