C.J. Karamargin, spokesman for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, speaks about Gabe Zimmerman, 30, who was killed in Saturday's rampage:

Gabe was the face of the congresswoman’s office in many communities. He would speak on her behalf at events and he was a good person to have in that role because he knew a lot of stuff. He knew the congresswoman’s positions, but like the congresswoman, he also was a people person.

Gabe was a social worker. He had a master’s degree in social work. He was a social worker who was doing his work for a member of Congress. Social workers help people for a living. Gabe helped people for a living.

The congresswoman looks at her job as a member of Congress as being able to help people. Constituent service is a No. 1 priority for our office and that put a lot of responsibility on Gabe.

And so here’s this 30 year old guy who was wise beyond his years and dedicated and loyal and determined. He was there to help people. Medicare benefits, veterans benefits—these are the things that we do, day in and day out, that never get any press attention. The discussion of bills, that gets press attention. A vote on a controversial bill, that will get press attention.

But when you help someone get a medal that they should have received at the conclusion of World War II because they were a survivor of a ship that was sunk off the beaches of Normandy but they never got it for some reason—those are the kinds of things that, for the congresswoman and Gabe, make what they do immensely satisfying.
