— 11 patients were brought to UMC. First was 9-year-old, Christina Green, who was declared dead after efforts to resuscitate failed.
— Five patients arrived in serious condition.
— Five arrived in critical.
— Six patients needed surgery.
Only one patient—Gabrielle Giffords—remains in critical condition; three in serious; rest in good or fair; one released.
Giffords was responsive when brought in. When she arrived, first step was to stop bleeding, then remove pressure from brain. Next step was to removed small parts of "devitalized brain." Thankfully, not a lot of those.
The bullet did not cross both hemispheres, but did go through the left side of left brain. It seemed to have entered through the back of the head.
Giffords has been able to communicate through the "following of simple commands."
The fear now is swelling. But doctors are cautiously optimistic.
Surgery took two hours.
