Feds File Suit Against SB 1070

As expected, the U.S. Justice Department has filed suit to challenge SB 1070, Arizona's new immigration law.

Democratic Congressman Raul Grijalva's response:

This is exactly the right time for our federal government to send a message about the importance of fairness and equality under the law. I join many others in thanking the president for his outreach and his leadership, and I look forward to working with him to ensure that justice is done for the people of Arizona and the country.

Last week, Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords said she had urged the Obama administration not to file suit.

Reacting to news of the lawsuit, former state lawmaker Jonathan Paton, one of five Republicans who are competing in a GOP primary to decide who faces Giffords in November, said: "This president and Nancy Pelosi asked Giffords for her vote for health care and all we got in return was this lousy lawsuit. She said this president would take us in a new direction and boy, was she right."
