Republican Jonathan Paton, one of four GOP candidates vying to defeat Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Congressional District 8, releases this statement on the health-care vote:
It's unfortunate that Gabrielle Giffords has decided to put loyalty to Nancy Pelosi before loyalty to her constituents with her scheduled vote today for the costly health care bill. I guess now we know why she's received all those earmarks.
This bill is a disaster for America, and the congresswoman's continued claims of fiscal conservatism have lost complete credibility with today's vote. Almost as alarming as her support for this legislation is the fact that the congresswoman waited until hours before the scheduled vote to come clean about her stance. She provided no interviews and didn't engage with the public in any meetings or town halls prior to this latest decision.
Gabrielle Giffords is already making false claims in
an effort to mislead the public and steer them away from the real facts of the bill.
She says it will be paid for and save us money. But in reality, it will grow the size of government and cost more than $1 trillion. When's the last time a government program saved taxpayers money? Additionally, this bill certainly doesn't meet the "Pay as you Go" requirement Gabrielle Giffords has falsely been saying she follows for the past three years.
It's up to us to make sure voters know the truth about this bill as Giffords and her allies try to distort the facts. With her vote, Giffords has signaled to President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and scores of liberal interest groups like Code Pink and ACORN that she is counting on their money and help to reelect her in District 8.
This campaign is about finally holding Washington and Gabrielle Giffords accountable.
Over the past year, this health care bill has become an outrage; an outrage that has become a revolution. And this revolution, I promise you, on the first Tuesday in November, will lead to a shake-up in Washington the likes of which we have not seen in a generation.
