When Idiots Attack

This week in Media Watch, John Schuster discusses a tiff between Derechos Humanos and Jon Justice, a local talk-show host with a ridiculous pseudonym.

To recap: Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio did a book-signing in Tucson on July 10, which was protested by Derechos Humanos. These Derechos Humanos protesters included Isabel Garcia, who also happens to work for Pima County as a legal defender, and who also happened to be filmed parading around with the head of a recently beaten Arpaio piñata. Justice and some other right-wingers freaked out and said that Garcia should be canned by the county; Derechos Humanos retorted by calling for supporters to express their dismay to businesses who advertise on Justice's station.

In other words, all parties involved are acting like idiots.

Arpaio is a cranky attention whore who feels it's perfectly OK to demonize illegal immigrants and throw journalists he doesn't like in jail. Jon Justice is using the whole matter as a ploy to get more listeners, further demonize illegal immigrants and give racists like the Asshat who burns Mexican flags something to bitch about--all the while ignoring the fact that Garcia, on her own time, has the right to do whatever the hell she wants. But Garcia had to know that parading around with part of a recently beheaded Arpaio piñata was a bad idea that would bring a lot of unwanted publicity to her bosses at the county, yet she did so anyway.

Idiots. All of them.

In any case, I hope you enjoy Media Watch, and the rest of this week's issue, including our summer Yum! dining guide.
