The Big Winners

During the past five years, Tohono O'odham Nation's casinos have bankrolled a number of economic and social projects that are either finished or in the planning stages, including:

· $24 million for scholarships for 1,200 students

· $14 million to build and operate a community college, with an additional $71 million budgeted over a five-year period

· $8.2 million for seven Early Childhood Head Start facilities

· 66 percent of the nation's police budget, including 74 officers, 30 rangers, 109 support staffers, 40 vehicles and four substations

· $2.1 million fire budget, which includes 32 firefighters, five support staffers, 16 vehicles and four substations

· $11.2 million for a westside clinic in the Gu Achi district

· $14 million for a 60-bed nursing home

· $2.5 million for a kidney dialysis center

· $30 million for 11 youth recreation centers

· $15 million in health care services

· $15 million for business grants to more than 150 grant recipients

· $10.5 million for proposed economic development in 2001

· $1.5 million to build and operate a radio station

· $52 million to build the recently opened third casino

· $15.2 million to build a cultural museum to house ancestral Hohokam artifacts
