R.I.P., Cyril Barrett

RIP, CYRIL BARRETT

Not too much in the way of details as I'm writing this, but Cyril Barrett, a songwriter who had spent the last eight years or so here in Tucson, performing with members of the Giant Sand circle and others, passed away over the weekend. We'll have more on his music and life on The Range in forthcoming days, but mark your calendar for Sunday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. for a memorial of Barrett's life on the Che's Lounge patio. The event, with performances by Gabe Sullivan, Naim Amor, Howe Gelb and many more, will raise money to create a compilation of Barrett's music and to benefit his family. More info at facebook.com/events/672578256158708. Condolences to his family and friends.

GODDAM SOUNDS GOOD

Certainly, there were a lot of memories of the Downtown Performance Center floating around social media last week as the venue's home met the wrecking ball. I certainly have plenty of my own. Among them, the first time I saw Doo Rag and the duo's improvised take on Mississippi Fred McDowell-style blues, with Bob Log III singing through a vacuum cleaner hose and Thermos Malling using a Budweiser box as part of his percussion set up. We're still lucky enough to get a Bob Log show here in town every year or so (he lives in Australia last I heard) and the raucous, furious, occasionally debaucherous affairs are a must see, whether it's your first or 10th time experiencing what the Tucson music legend offers live. Bob Log III is scheduled to play Flycatcher on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 9 p.m. with Pork Torta and Hermanitos. Tickets are $12. More info at theflycatchertucson.com.

In related news, on Bob Log's website (boblog111.com), he'll write a song about the butt of your choice for $199.99 (plus shipping), plus you get to pick whether he plays a guitar or banjo, the beat style and tempo. Just something to remember as the holidays approach.

MANIPULATE YOUR FIGMENTS

Although the absurdity of the un-air conditioned heat inside the venue for the Future Islands show made for a somewhat unpleasant experience at 191 Toole last week, the list of shows coming to the open warehouse space keeps getting better and better and the temperatures inside should improve, plus it's always good to have more places where bands are playing any given night. On Friday, Sept. 5, German trio the Picturebooks take the stage with their gritty take on blues influenced garage rock. If you like The Hives or the Eagles of Death Metal, motorcycles or skateboarding (a big part of the group's influences), you'll want to check these guys out. No word on an opener for the 7 p.m. all-ages show, but tickets are just $10. More info at facebook.com/191toole.

YOU, OR YOU AND YOU, AND ME

An interesting local music collaboration is set for the Rialto on Friday, Sept. 5 as modern-bluegrass act Run Boy Run and acoustic duo Ryanhood are co-headlining a show. Run Boy Run are celebrating their second full-length, "Something to Someone," coming out this month on Sky Island Records and co-produced by Ryan Hadlock, who also worked on the Lumineers record. Both groups will be playing full sets, with some collaborations between the two promised as well. Tickets are $15 for the 7 p.m. all-ages show.

Not to overdue the Rialto news this week, but even beyond the Maria Bamford show on Saturday, Sept. 6, there's also the Porter Robinson show on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Robinson is emerging as one of the biggest names in EDM right now as his debut album "Worlds" hit stores last month, so this might be the last time you can see him in a venue the size of the Rialto. Reflecting his transition from the Skrillex-protégé aesthetic that marked his debut on to the scene, Robinson's apparently doing a more-live instrument oriented show now, leaving the DJ thing behind, which makes sense, since "Worlds" is more of a Passion Pit-ish sweet electro-pop record than a straight-ahead synth-and-giant-bass thing. Tickets for the all-ages show are $37 with a $60 VIP option, with doors at 7 p.m. More info on all the week's shows (and the forthcoming Insane Clown Posse show on Oct. 16) at rialtotheatre.com.
