Visit Singapore Without the Airfare

Downtown Kitchen + Cocktails rolled out their annual Downtown's Across the Globe concept last week, beginning in Singapore. The Southeast Asian country has a very eclectic and unique cuisine, fitting for a Janos dining experience. The regional menu features such dishes as Pork Belly/Pineapple Satay, Singapore Chili Crab with fried soft shells, and Pineapple Almond Tart with coconut ice cream and lychee caramel. They also have a Singapore influenced cocktail called the Singaporean Cha Cha, which I had to try myself, and it is refreshingly divine! Also at DK+C, they are offering up 15 percent off of your meal when you bring in your ticket stub from the Jon Favreau food truck-themed film Chef. Tilt Ya Kilt

I normally avoid the chain scene like the plague. This bit of news, however, I did find to be interesting enough to warrant some hypocrisy. Phoenix-based Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery is preparing to expand into Tucson with a new location slated to open in the former Risky Business (which closed May 25) at 250 S. Craycroft Road, Ste 140. For those who are unfamiliar with the conglomerate pub (I admire you for that), it's a bar and grill modeled after traditional Scottish/Irish/English pubs (sort of), offering standard burger-based bar fare, a somewhat impressive list of beers, and a few tips to the British Isles (fish and chips, shepherd's pie, something called "Irish Nachos"). Tiled Kilt is primarily known, however, for their attractive staff, who are dressed in short kilts and bobby socks. They are expected to be up and running by summer's end.

Food Fest on Fourth

Ever-lively Fourth Avenue is adding a weekly event this summer, called, appropriately, Fourth Avenue Food Fest with a soft opening occurring Friday, June 13. The event will take place each Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Other than the fact that the event is being promoted as "local food, music, talent, and art all in one place," there is not much more information at this time, but I imagine a smaller street fair scene with live music, and vendors of all sorts. They have a website up (foodinroot.com/events/fourth-avenue-food-fest/) but your best bet might be just to go down and check it out yourself.

Help Put the Chiltepin on the Cocktail Map

Vicki Gilbert, a board member of Slow Food Southern Arizona and owner of Pizzeria Mimosa in Hereford, has been chosen to participate in Slow Food Speakeasy's Ark of Taste in the USA competition. Vicki's drink, Holy Mole, features ingredients indigenous to our area such as the chiltepin pepper (my favorite little ball of fire!) agave and mole sauce.
