Fat Tuesday Happenings

For those who don't know, Fat Tuesday (aka Mardi Gras) involves eating a large amount of rich, fatty foods on the day before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. Kingfisher Bar & Grill (2564 E. Grant Road) and Bluefin Seafood Bistro (7053 N. Oracle Road) have been celebrating Fat Tuesday since they opened. The festivities this Tuesday, March 4, will feature classic N'awlins dishes such as gumbo, red beans and rice and jambalaya. Drinks will include traditional Mardi Gras cocktails such as Booze Hurricanes and Sazaracs along with Dixie Lager and Abita Turbodog, two Louisiana beers. Casino Del Sol Resort's PY Steakhouse, 5655 W. Valencia Road, is hosting a "Bombay Buffet," an evening of gin cocktails and cuisine, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27. Guests will enjoy such dishes as smoked duck dumplings and Vietnamese crab cakes created by PY Steakhouse chef Erik Savin and paired cocktails featuring Bombay Sapphire crafted by award-winning mixologist Aaron DeFeo. Celebrity Chef Showcase

The Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort & Spa is hosting the 2014 Celebrity Chef Showcase, presented by the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance in conjunction with the 2014 Tucson Festival of Books. The event, which starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, will feature culinary experts from around the world creating signature dishes from their latest published cookbooks.

The talent to be showcased at the event includes world-renowned chef Rick Tramonto, who will be paired with Gold's executive chef, Antonio Rodriguez; chef Sandy D'Amato with chef Albert Hall of Acacia; chef Hugo Ortega with chef Maria Mazon of BOCA Tacos y Tequila; and chef Suzanne Goin with chef Ginny Wooters of The Abbey, Jax Kitchen and Poppy's Kitchen. Tucson Iron Chef winner Ryan Clark will also appear along with special-guest restaurateur Sam Fox. Tickets are $125 and proceeds benefit paid internships for Slow Food Southern Arizona and SAACA's arts therapy and education programs.
