Noshing Around

Travel Channel Returns to Tucson

The Travel Channel is coming to Tucson to tape a show focusing on Sonoran hot dogs, says Martha Menocal of El Güero Canelo. Tucsonans are invited to attend a taping at El Güero Canelo's original location at 5201 S. 12th Ave. on Friday, Jan. 29. The public is also encouraged to attend a taping on Saturday, Jan. 30, at BK Carne Asada and Hot Dogs Estilo Sonora (5118 S. 12th Ave.), when the eatery takes on El Güero Canelo in a Sonoran hot dog cook-off.

Sir Veza's

We had a blast on a recent visit to Sir Veza's Taco Garage and Gastro Pub at 4699 E. Speedway Blvd. Gas cans, hubcaps, vintage hotrod posters and car hoods decorated by Johnny Vegas of Hi-Speed Rods and Customs dominate a décor that never strays from an automotive theme. The food, however, often strays from that of a typical taco joint. Taco ingredients include Thai peanut sauce, Italian sausage, rosemary potatoes, marinara, hot dogs and other items. Burgers, wings and salads are also available. Overall, you'll find an upbeat atmosphere, fast service, a patio area and a "Lowrider Lounge" outfitted with stunning art and swanky seating; 323-8226; www.sirvezas.com.

The Sugar O.D.

Here's a dessert sweet enough to terrify even the severely sugar-addicted: Four giant brownies, four pieces of cheesecake and four scoops of ice cream topped with four cherries and chocolate syrup. Meet Something Sweet Dessert Lounge's "Sugar O.D." challenge, a $30 saccharine juggernaut that has already taken down the eight brave souls to attempt it. If you eat it in 45 minutes—and keep it down for 10 minutes more—it's free, and you get a T-shirt and your picture on the wall of fame. The restaurant is located at 5319 E. Speedway Blvd.; 881-7735.

Pasta for Peace

The Tucson Peace Center is throwing its annual all-you-can-eat vegetarian spaghetti feast at 6 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, at First Christian Church (740 E. Speedway Blvd.). Joe Bernick says he's making a salad with dozens of vegetables, two kinds of sauce and a big pot of black beans. It's $7 per person, which includes entertainment by Mark Holdaway, Chet Gardiner and Dasheya. Proceeds help pay for the Tucson Peace Calendar and the Tucson Peace Festival at Reid Park on Saturday, Feb. 27; 440-4089.
