Chuck Wagon Roundup

Sam Hughes Elementary School hosts the 69th roundup fundraiser on Saturday, March 10, from 3 to 8 p.m. Alumni young and old are encouraged to attend in cowboy attire. The Tucson Rodeo Museum will have docents in attendance, along with a real chuck wagon and Tucson Electric Power line wagon. Eat some grub for only $6, featuring chili, roasted corn on the cob, chicken, hot dogs, beans and pizza. Enjoy games, face painting, a jumping castle, live music and dancing--in other words, fun for all ages at 700 N. Wilson Ave.; call 232-7400 for information.

Laurent Is Back

Laurent Reux, former chef/owner of Le Bistro, has returned to Tucson after taking a year off to travel. Now he's doing private dinner parties and cooking classes in people's homes. Please contact him at 444-2893 or lreux@aol.com .

Whole Foods Buys Wild Oats

Whole Foods announced that they will be buying Wild Oats Markets, one of their top competitors, for a cool $565 million. Wild Oats has 24 stores in the United States and British Columbia, with two in Tucson. Some Wild Oats stores will close, and some will become Whole Foods; hopefully, the latter will happen to the Tucson stores. According to Fortune magazine, Whole Foods is one of the top 10 best companies to work for.

Closed

J Nippon and its sister restaurant Yama are closed. Why? Is there just too much sushi in this town--or too much mediocre sushi? According to a source, both restaurants have been up for sale for a year. J Nippon in the Foothills Mall suffered debt during its construction, and Yama's location tucked away at Kolb Road and Sunrise Drive just didn't draw enough traffic.

Mona Lisa

What happened to Mona Lisa? The eastside Italian restaurant closed a few months ago, and rumor had it owners were looking for a location on Oracle Road. Why? Oracle Road is already cluttered with competing signage. Two people who were in town for the Gem Show asked us about the restaurant's whereabouts. If you're in the know, please contact me.
