Lunch With Zarela

On Saturday, Nov. 5, join Mexican taste maven Zarela Martinez for a demonstration, cooking class and luncheon at Westward Look Resort. Zarela will feature recipes from her latest book, Zarela's Veracruz: Cooking and Culture in Mexico's Tropical Melting Pot, named one of the Top 10 cookbooks of 2001. With the encouragement of Paul Prudhomme and Craig Claiborne, who were impressed by her vivid Mexican food, Zarela opened her first restaurant in Manhattan in 1983 and has been winning awards ever since. Join her for lunch and lively conversation at 11 a.m. at the Westward Look Resort. Tickets are $65 (includes tax/gratuity) and may be purchased at

www.tucsonculinaryfestival.com or by calling 622-0525, ext. 235.

Café Ramey

Departing Weekly contributor Walt Nett passed along this tip before moving to Fresno: Café Ramey is open for Sunday brunch from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and has live music. A call to the restaurant confirmed the music, but it's up the musicians as to how long they want to play. Perhaps they need more encouragement? Check it out at 1661 N. Swan Road; 319-2600.

Love-Hate Relationship

We have a love-hate relationship with Trader Joe's. What's not to love? An awesome selection of products priced much lower than A.J.'s Fine Foods. But what we hate is how products that we have fallen in love with disappear without any warning (much like past lovers). For instance, take the frozen parsley and garlic cubes. The garlic is long gone, and the parsley dwindles. Will it reappear? The supplying company, Dorot, was located in the Gaza Strip and is now shrouded in much uncertainty. Stay tuned ...

An Institution Says Au Revoir

Chef Laurent Reux announced that he is closing Le Bistro after 15 years. Why? He will not renew his lease; perhaps landlord problems are an issue. However, he looks forward to having time to travel and pursue private catering. For now, you can still dine at Le Bistro until Dec. 31; 2574 N Campbell Ave.; 327-3086.
