Canal Street Pizzeria

For ex-New Yorkers, Canal Street will ring a bell as a destination for all things Italian. Here, pizza (what else?) reigns supreme. Try the three most popular pies: cardio--piled with pepperoni, sliced link sausage, meatballs, ham, Philly steak and extra cheese; sauce-free Whitey Ford--cheese, garlic, olive oil and spices; and the classic with red sauce. Locally owned and recently opened in the River Center next to Shabu Shabu on 5655 E. River Road at Craycroft Road; 615-2262.

Manicures and Martinis

Terra Cotta has teamed up with Elizabeth Arden's Red Door Spa on the third Monday of the month (through November) for free manicures and $5 martinis and margaritas. Look for manicurists stationed on the patio and prepare to be pampered from 4 to 7 p.m. at 3500 E. Sunrise Drive; 577-8100.

Gourmet Vegetarian

So few restaurants offer sophisticated vegetarian and vegan fare that Soleil Restaurant has decided to fill that niche, supplementing its regular menu by adding choices dependent on what's fresh and organic from Pima and Cochise counties. A sampling of menu items includes vine-ripened heirloom tomatoes with shaved cheese; savory cheesecake with crisp apples; and balsamic gastrique and roasted succotash with forbidden black rice and wilted greens. Soleil is at 3001 E. Skyline Drive; 299-3345. For a complete vegetarian menu, check out www.soleiltucson.com.

Award of Excellence

Wine Spectator magazine recently awarded Pastiche Modern Eatery for its wine list. To celebrate, Pastiche is selling all wines at retail (no pricey mark-up) for the entire month of August at 3025 N. Campbell Ave.; 325-3333.

RA Surpasses Fundraising Goal

From May 29 through June 4, eight RA Sushi restaurants, including the local one at La Encantada, raised more than $75,000 for St. Jude Children's Hospital. The fundraiser was developed in memory of longtime St. Jude patient Nicholas "Nicky" Mailliard, who died in February 2005 after a long battle with brain cancer. The nephew of RA's director of operations, Rich Howland, Nicky held a special place in the hearts of RA associates.
