Weekly music and film writer Casey Dewey is the official local Tucson scene cartographer. You might have seen Dewey on Access Tucson in the early '90s or read his work in outlets like Network Awesome. Dewey, a Tucson native, also hosts "Deep Red Radio" on 91.3 KXCI FM every Tuesday from 2:30 to 5 a.m, but is soon packing up and moving to Austin with his fiancée.
What was the first concert you attended?
My mom took me to some party where local band Street Pajama was playing. I was so young I thought they were Blondie.
What are you listening to these days?
Killing Joke, Trans Am, the Melvins, Sly and the Family Stone, Isaac Hayes, David Lynch.
What was the first album you owned?
I think the first album I bought with my allowance was the View to a Kill soundtrack. I was really into Duran Duran at the time. The rest of it was the John Barry score, which I fell in love with. I guess I should thank Duran Duran for getting me into film scores. Thanks, Duran Duran.
What artist, genre or musical trend does everyone seem to love, but you just don't get?
Who are Mumford & Sons? Why should I care about the Avett Brothers? What are The Lumineers? All of those acts are like the "artisanal, handcrafted bread" of music.
What musical act, current or defunct, would you most like to see perform live?
The Butthole Surfers, circa 1987, with several tabs of Orange Sunshine.
What is your favorite guilty pleasure?
I'm a sucker for the Grease soundtrack. Every song is a gem.
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
"The Hell of It," by Paul Williams off the Phantom of the Paradise soundtrack. I'll self-deprecate to the grave.
What artist changed your life and how?
The Ramones. Hearing those songs when I was around 10, 11 years old really did a number on me. It was great being an outsider, outside of everything. It was awesome because I didn't wanna to walk around with you either. I was against everything and I didn't care. All of those songs were/are anthems.
Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?
Wire's Pink Flag.
