Terry Owen, aka Fish Karma, is a musician and comedian who first started performing at the UA's Comedy Corner in the early '80s. He is currently recording a new CD.
What was the first concert you ever saw?
Three Dog Night at the Compton Terrace Stage at Legend City in Phoenix. In those days, middle schoolers ... couldn't avoid erupting into tuneless renditions of "Joy to the World," even though none of us knew what the words meant. In fact, I still don't.
What CDs are in your changer right now?
My current obsession is downloading music videos from YouTube, which, being an idiot, I only recently learned how to do.
How many total albums do you own (CDs, vinyl, cassettes, 8-tracks)?
I used to own thousands of albums, CDs, cassettes, 8-tracks and flex-discs, all of which I sold. Currently, I'm down to about 47 CDs, most of which seem to be Jethro Tull. (That doesn't sound very hip, does it? I meant to say Cambodian emo death-core rap.)
Do you download music, and if so, legally or illegally?
What is this Limewire of which you speak? I may have dabbled a bit in illegal downloading when I was younger and prone to peer pressure.
What was the first album you owned?
Bill Cosby, To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With. My initial love was for 45s. ... I once played the song "D.O.A." by Bloodrock so many times in a row that my father burst into my room, tore the record from the turntable and smashed it into many pieces.
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
Ike and Tina Turner, "Funkier Than a Mosquito's Tweeter."
Musically speaking, what do you love that your friends don't know about? What's your favorite guilty pleasure?
I love Yoko Ono. Unconditionally.
What band or artist changed your life, and how?
Two crucial turning points were probably Black Sabbath, Paranoid, and Bob Dylan, The Basement Tapes.
Figurative gun to your head, what is your favorite album of all time?
One Size Fits All, by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
