In Bloom

With escalating tensions in Ukraine bookending the tumultuous Olympics in Sochi, this is a good time to go back to the beginning of the post-Soviet era. In Bloom takes place in the former Soviet Georgia, a year after the Berlin Wall came down. It’s not exactly a look at the economically distressed young nation, although that plays a part in the subtext. In Bloom is really about two teenage girls coming to grips with womanhood in an environment that has very little practical use for women outside of being mothers and wives. Although it’s a fascinating portrait of the tender years during a delicate time, In Bloom lacks a sense of direction before finally bringing the pieces together at the end of the film. It’s worth hanging around for, even if the road there is circuitous.

In Bloom is not showing in any theaters in the area.
