Pima Community College Family Heritage Celebration

In conjunction with Pima College's production of Fiddler on the Roof, the school is holding a sort of pre-show celebration of our own community's cultural diversity. The Family Heritage Celebration will be held in the courtyard outside Pima's Center for the Arts, with the centerpiece of the free event being a multimedia presentation of community-submitted images chronicling how the region's residents got here. "We wanted people to show us how they came to Tucson, and if they've been here for a long time," said Carol Carder, marketing and public relations director for Pima's Center for the Arts. Carder said Fiddler, which will feature an all-Pima College cast and crew and is the largest of the school's theater productions for the 2013-14 school year, provided a good opportunity for a community event. A call for submissions went out to the public, and more than 125 people submitted images and stories about their family's heritage. A large photo montage will be displayed in the Proscenium Theatre foray throughout Fiddler's run from Feb. 20 to March 2, while a slideshow featuring some of the images will be shown during the Family Heritage Celebration. The pre-show event—which is separate from the play itself, will include live entertainment in the courtyard outside the theater. The schedule includes performances by the Redhouse Dancers, Cholla High School's mariachi band, the Folk Dance Club of Sun Oro Valley and Rincon/University High School's marching band flute trio. While the Family Heritage Celebration is free, tickets to Fiddler on the Roof are $18, though discounts are available through Pima's Web site.
