A Silver Salute offers up more than 300 quilts and other quilted items. Keynote speaker is award-winning quilt artist and designer Betty Alofs. There are also demonstrations, boutiques, vendors and the famed raffle quilt for 2003, Wildflower Path, designed and created by members of the Guild.
The show threads its way through the Tucson Convention Center, 260 S. Church Ave., on Friday and Saturday, January 10-11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, January 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For details, visit the Guild's website at www.iwhome.com/quilter.
BEING THERE. "You can read books, study the analyses, see films, even hear survivors' accounts, but nothing fully prepares you for the actual experience of being there," says photographer Ben Golden.
He's referring to Auschwitz and Birkenau, death-camps of the most evil kind.
Golden has documented sites in Krakow and Oswiecim, which were once towns teaming with Jews. The Nazis decimated these bergs and others like them across Europe.
Being There is a collection of Golden's photos on exhibit at the Jewish Community Center located at Dodge south of River Road. Golden offers insight into his experiences recording his impressions with his camera for one week in Poland in 1999. His lecture begins at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 12. There's a reception at noon. Co-sponsored by the Jewish Historical Society of Southern Arizona, the exhibit, lecture and reception are free.
WHAT WILL HE WEAR? On Saturdays in January, Center Theater, an interactive children's theater, delights its audiences with a twist on a classic fairy tale. The Emperor's New Clothes features an ending that is not what you'd expect. There are two famous celebrities in town and the Emperor of Caddilackia has ordered a new suit, without the help of the empress or the mayor. You know what happens when you let an emperor dress himself.
