Cheap Thrills

BIG SCREEN WINNER. What Bette Davis film won six Oscars, including Best Picture, and was nominated for a half-dozen more?

All about Eve is Thursday's outdoor show at La Placita Village. The movie, starring Davis as Broadway star Margo Channing, is a classic story of ambition and betrayal.

The movie starts at 7:30 p.m. at 110 S. Church Ave. The weekly screenings are free, but a $3 donation to help restore the historic Fox Theatre is encouraged. Several La Placita Village restaurants will be open for dinner on Thursday evening. For more information, call 325-2202.

LEARN SOME NEW TRICKS. If you're a new parent, or even an old one, you may find yourself at wit's end from time to time.

Perhaps you need a new approach to the myriad challenges of parenting. Tucson author Lynn Wiese Sneyd's new book, Holistic Parenting: Raising Children to a New Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Well-Being, may offer some help.

Sneyd will discuss her work at 7 p.m. Friday at Antigone Books, 411 N. Fourth Ave. The reading will be followed by a Q&A session. For more information, call 792-3715 or visit www.antigonebooks.com.

DON'T DUCK THIS DISCO. A quarter century. Not many businesses can boast 25 years of business.

For book stores that don't cater to pseudo-intellectuals and their sparkling vacant-eyed offspring and the gotta-have-it-new, gotta have-it-now, gotta-pretend-to-read-it-over-a-$4-cup-of-coffee crowd, it's almost unheard-of.

Well, you probably didn't hear it here first, but Bookman's is celebrating its 25th anniversary on Saturday with a -- Disco Party!

Yes, it's different. But have you ever seen the goofy guy on the TV commercials? He owns the place(s), for crying out loud. You're encouraged to come dressed in your best '70s clothes. Desert DJs will be there with appropriate tunes, and dance contests and a "costume" contest add to what sounds like an odd and funny good time.

The party is from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at both Bookman's locations--1930 E. Grant Road and 3733 W. Ina Road. For more information, call 325-5767 or 579-0303, or visit www.bookmans.com.

TOASTING A FINE FINISH. Join others who have enjoyed the shows at Elizabeth Cherry Contemporary Art in a closing reception Saturday.

Art-lovers know the gallery is closing after a five-year run. Cherry's new job with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tucson led to the decision to close.

A final exhibition features highlights from the last five years, including work by Peter Young, Valerie Galloway, Sylvie Fleury, Steven Parrino and others.

The gallery shuts for good Saturday, following a closing reception from 7 to 10 p.m. The gallery is located at 441 E. Grant Road. For more information, call 903-0577.
