Cheap Thrills

ART STEW: The Dinnerware Contemporary Art Gallery stirs the creative stew with New Art Mix.

This fresh show includes spanking new pieces by Dinnerware members. The work ranges from sculpture by Selina Littler and drawings by Eric Twachtman to mixed media by Chris Morrey and paintings by Michael Chittock.

New Art Mix runs through September 16, with an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 25 in the Dinnerware Contemporary Art Gallery, 135 E. Congress St. Regular gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call 792-4503 for details.

SOUND AND SCREEN: Silent screen legend John Barrymore gets a fresh treatment when La Placita Village hosts an outdoor screening of his classic 1920 movie, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Music by Tucson's Sam Robles Jazz Septet will accompany the film.

Members of the septet have written all original compositions inspired by, and composed for, the original film. And in case you've been marooned in deepest Mongolia for the last few centuries, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is Robert Louis Stevenson's creepy classic about a humanitarian doctor obsessed with separating good and evil impulses within every person. He develops a potion that releases his own darker side--the demonic Mr. Hyde.

The event is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 26 in La Placita Village, 110 S. Church St., on the southwest corner of Church and Broadway. A $5 donation for the band is suggested. Call 623-2748 for details.

LITTLE LATINOS: Local dentist, global trekker and habitual shutterbug Mark McMahon unveils his latest south-of-the-border photography in Los Niños Latinos.

The show features children photographed during McMahon's five-month trek across the jungles, villages and mountains of Latin America. The exhibit takes the viewer "beyond the poverty and poor living conditions that exist for Latin America's children, and acknowledges the universal beauty, simplicity and innocence of children being children!."

A portion of proceeds from the sale of McMahon's photos, prints and greeting cards will benefit Casa Alianza, a child-advocacy group for street kids, with offices throughout Latin America.

Los Niños Latinos runs through September 15, with an opening reception from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, August 24 in Photographic Works, 3550 E. Grant Road. For details, call 577-4663.

HIDDEN HAUNTS. Explore the edges of human experience with a free screening of Sixth Sense.

Presented by the Tacheria Interfaith Spirituality Center, it tells the story of a 10-year-old boy who's able to see the restless spirits of dead people, and his relationship with a therapist determined to help him understand these visions. The powerful film stars Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osmart and Toni Collette. A discussion will follow.

Sixth Sense shows at 7 p.m. in St. Phillip's in the Hills' Palo Verde Room, 4440 N. Campbell Ave. at River Road. Call 299-6421 for information.
