The UA's Lesbian Looks film series has grown from a small, on-campus event to a citywide celebration of films that delve into the intertwinings of lesbian life not normally found in mainstream entertainment.
Now in its 21st year, the series kicks off with a screening of Reaching for the Moon, a 2013 Brazilian film that was an official selection at the Tribeca and Berlin film festivals and won audience awards from the Frameline and Outfest events. It's also nominated for a 2014 GLAAD award.
The film tells the true story of American poet Elizabeth Bishop and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares, who met in South America during the 1950s.
"Our mission is to show work in Tucson that you wouldn't otherwise see in Tucson," said Lesbian Looks director Beverly Seckinger, who has been a part of the film series since its inception.
Tickets for Reaching for the Moon are at regular Loft Cinema prices, which is $9.25 for general admission, $7.50 for students and teachers (with ID), $6.25 for seniors and children and $5.75 for Loft members.
Lesbian Looks was the first public program put forth by the UA's committee on LGBT studies, which is now the Institute for LGBT Studies. The first few years saw films only shown in the school's Modern Languages Building, but since then it's expanded to various venues throughout Tucson.
The 2014 series has five films at five different venues. In addition to the Loft, screenings are scheduled for the Exploded View Microcinema (197 E. Toole Ave.), Flux Gallery (414 E. Ninth St.), the UA's Cesar Chavez Building (1110 E. N. Campus Drive) and at the Harkins Cinema on Tucson's southwest side.
