Park(ing) Day and GABA Fall Bike Swap This Saturday

It's getting easier to be green.

Here's your chance to experience Park(ing) Day this Saturday, November 16th, at  Exo Roast Co. and Tap & Bottle located near the intersection of North Sixth Avenue and East Seventh Street. The event will be in conjunction with the Greater Arizona Bicycling Association’s annual Fall Bike Swap at 400 North Fifth Avenue.

Park(ing) Day is made possible by Living Streets Alliance (LSA), the Sustainable City Project (SCP), and the University of Arizona College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA), and the participation of local businesses Exo Roast Co. and Tap & Bottle.

“Parklets create cost-effective, quality, mini-parks that enhance business districts and ‘green’ the streets,” says Emily Yetman, Executive Director of Living Streets Alliance. “They give shoppers a comfortable place to relax in between activities, and create a unique focal point for passersby, improving the attractiveness of the area as well and the quality of the pedestrian space. They’re a great way to increase walkability and in doing so, attract more customers to local businesses.”

Additional activities at Park(ing) Day include:
• Interactive “Build Your Own City” model
• “I Wish This Was” project inspired by New Orleans’ public artist Candy Chang
• Urban agriculture demonstrations
• Food trucks, DJ’s, entertainment
• Mobile organic produce market
• Exclusive first look at Social Bicycle bike share
The press release says that what you see this Saturday will look different from the pilot parklet that's scheduled to be finished by 2014. For more information visit the official Park(ing) Day website and GABA Facebook event page.
