Harold Jones: A Fortunate Life

¡Viva David Tineo! A Retrospective of Tucson's Muralist and Art Educator

Harold Jones is a photographer, and David Tineo a painter—and both men have contributed mightily to Tucson. Jones, now 70, came to the Old Pueblo as the first director of the Center for Creative Photography in 1975, and stayed on to start up a photography program at the UA; he taught for years. His retrospective at ArtsEye of austere black-and-white photographs was a needed reminder of how good of an artist he is. Tineo, 55, is best known as a muralist who has taken brush and paint to hundreds of the town's walls, celebrating the city's Mexican-American heritage. Like Jones, he taught for years—at Pima Community College—and worked with kids in multiple mural art programs. His retrospective exhibited his smaller, lesser-known easel paintings, brilliantly colored homages to Chicano iconography. The surprise of the show was his most recent work, painted since he began to lose his eyesight in recent years. These luminous paintings were light and lovely.
