Best Theater Production

The Kite Runner at Arizona Theatre Company

Staff Pick

Theater is truly the art of arts. Its practitioners meld many components of artistic expression—language, music, dance, a strong sense of the visual—into an entity which aims to be grander than the sum of its parts. Rarely does it happen that all of these components work together in just the right proportions. When they do, you get something like The Kite Runner, Arizona Theatre Company's first production last season. Director David Ira Goldstein took Matthew Spangler's sensitive adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's book, shepherded the efforts of a stellar cast, and blended the visual mastery of production designers Vicki Smith, David Lee Cuthbert and Kish Finnegan, creating a beautiful, riveting and inspiring piece of theater. Moving and memorable, The Kite Runner was something special.
