It's still ugly as sin for some stretches, but Speedway Boulevard's landscaped medians are a big improvement over the situation in 1966, when LIFE magazine named it "the ugliest street in the America." And what other city street boasts a guest ranch and two mountain ranges? It's got every level of education; multiple ethnic restaurants; jobs at nearly every salary level; stores offering books, groceries, drugs, sporting goods, secondhand items, videos, sex toys and clothing; a movie theater; nightclubs; banks; churches; hotels; homes from humble to fabulous; everything for home and auto—and even a cemetery. What more do you really need to sustain life?
