Best Spectacle for Charity
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
The Oxford Dictionary defines "spectacle" as "anything attracting public attention." What could attract more public attention than 12,000-plus women, men and children decked out in pink ribbons, running to raise funds to fight breast cancer? Nothing our readers could think of. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is an annual 5k run held at Reid Park. The word "run" is used loosely here. Participants walk, jog, skip and ride in baby carriages, all for the sake of raising money--up to 75 percent of which stays in Southern Arizona--to fund research, education and screening programs for breast cancer detection. Since its inception in 1999, the Race for the Cure has raised more than $3 million. Next time around: April 2007.
