Festival en el Barrio Viejo

It may be too early to call the Festival en el Barrio Viejo a tradition after just two years, but here's hoping this fiesta becomes one. The most recent festival had so many standouts—from Al Perry's new Tiger Blood band to the sweet sounds of the Silver Thread Trio to Robyn Hitchcock performing with R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, who turned in a crackling set with his own Baseball Project earlier in the day. It's an all-day hootenanny in one of Tucson's finest neighborhoods, which most recently was capped off with a sunset Calexico performance that featured favorites and a few surprises, from a cover of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" to a guest appearance by local rapper Shaun Harris, who busted out during a revved-up "Crystal Frontier." It was a musical mash-up of epic proportions, all to benefit KXCI FM 91.3, and brought to you by the Rialto Theatre, Stateside Presents and the guys in Calexico. Let's do it again next year, OK?
