Daniel Neyoy Ruiz, his family and the Southside Presbyterian Church congregation are celebrating tonight with news that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) granted Neyoy a work permit and stay of removal.

A press conference and community event takes place tomorrow, Tuesday, June 10, at 12 Noon at Southside Presbyterian Church, 317 W 23rd Street (10th Ave. and 23rd St.).

From a press release, states that the stay of removal that was granted is dated May 14, 2014—the first day that the original request was received by local ICE officials—and is valid for one year.

From No More Deaths:

On Tuesday, May 13 Daniel Neyoy Ruiz — a husband, father and Tucson resident of 14 years — took public sanctuary at Southside Presbyterian Church. Neyoy Ruiz had received a final order of removal and his subsequent requests for a stay of removal had been denied, leading to a protracted campaign to keep his family together.

Over the course of the past month thousands of phone calls, emails and faxes have been sent to Cecilia Munoz, Assistant to the President and Director of the Domestic Policy Council, and Jeh Johnson, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, urging them to keep the Neyoy Ruiz family together. Since Neyoy Ruiz took sanctuary numerous other parents in similar situations have come forward and other faith communities have begun to discuss whether they too will offer sanctuary to neighbors and congregants facing deportation.

Said Reverend Alison Harrington, minister of Southside Presbyterian Church, “It is time the government change their practices to ensure that families are able to remain together and continue to contribute to the communities where they live. While we wait for the administration and Congress to act there remain thousands of other fathers, just like Daniel, who continue to face deportation and separation from their homes and loved ones.”

Said attorney Margo Cowan, “This is a great victory for the Tucson community and for the Neyoy Ruiz family. ICE’s decision to grant a stay of removal in Daniel’s case is an example of what should happen in all such cases. Daniel’s case is not exceptional and the fact that he was never granted prosecutorial discretion and then later denied a stay of removal should be reviewed by immigration officials. Until that time, I expect that we will see many more fathers and mothers coming forward and an ever-growing movement to support their fight to stay with their families.”

Daniel Neyoy Ruiz, his wife Karla, and their son Carlos were relieved to learn that Daniel’s will be allowed to remain in the United States. The family has plans to visit Mount Lemmon this weekend to enjoy one of their favorite family activities—hiking in cooler weather.
