Kickstarter comics have two black eyes at the moment thanks to John Campbell. Thankfully, creators like Fabian Rangel Jr. and Ryan Cody have a solid record and creative chops to back up their latest crowdfunding initiative to publish DOC UNKNOWN: Winter of the Damned. The duo are trying to raise and exceed their goal of $5,500 to publish their 104 page graphic novel. Rangel Jr. was at SXSW on Saturday promoting the campaign and revealed the visually stunning cover by Goon creator Eric Powell.

Rangel Jr. is a comic book artist's dream come true. He makes sure his artist are paid:

DOC UNKNOWN: Winter of the Damned & other tales will be a 104 page graphic novel. The book continues the strange adventures of the Gate City Guardian. Instead of putting out costly single issues we're going straight to trade. But before we can do that, we need funding to pay for Ryan's page rate (artists deserve to get paid!). The 5,500 will go to the art team, anything raised above that will go into the printing and shipping.

Cody and Rangel Jr.'s last Kickster project Boss Snake was successfully funded and they met their goal with in 14 hours and raised $5,000 more than they originally asked for.

The book will feature a 6-page story by Cody and pin ups by John Broglia (God Complex) Scott Godlewski (Dracula) Artyom Trakhanov (Undertow), Aaron Conley (Sabretooth Swordsman) and Nick Pitarra (Manhattan Projects). There will be an introduction by HOAX HUNTER writer Michael Moreci and the 12 page story currently appearing in Image Comics' Five Ghosts.
