What to Listen to This Week: Thursday Edition

Posted By on Thu, Nov 3, 2011 at 4:30 PM

Our weekly music suggestion service returns with picks from our music writers (and a few occasional interlopers), this time including tracks by Zapp & Roger, Mr. Gnome (for the second week!), and Roxy Music.

Jarret Keene
Zapp & Roger, "Computer Love"

Halloween's already a dark and delicious memory, which means it's time to start racking up credit card bills in anticipation for wrapping and unwrapping the latest gizmo-gadgets—iPads, Kindle Fires, etc. Perhaps the song best suited for an impending electronics-shopping orgy is Zapp & Roger's "Computer Love." Zapp & Roger was an '80s soul-funk-electro-boogie act that made famous use of the "talkbox," a vocal effect that today infects just about every crappy Top-40 pop hit in the updated form of Auto-Tune. That's OK; this song still jams.

Curtis McCrary
mr. Gnome, "House of Circles"

mr. Gnome is a fantastic Cleveland two-piece that's like a reverse White Stripes filtered through Rasputina. Or as Paste Magazine put it, "Sounds like ethereal Icelandic faeries being pummeled by concrete guitars. AKA awesome." Ok so that doesn't make that much sense, but surely you get the drift. "House of Circles" seems to be the lead single from their recently released Madness in Miniature long player. Check out this bonus preview clip with the two members rocking the hell out (they're both pretty easy on the eyes, to boot): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYuZD3f9LXM.

Michael Petitti
Roxy Music, "If It Takes All Night"

Had a minor awakening when I stumbled across this record in my dad's collection, and then, years later, I played it. An essential album, and I especially love this loose, almost boozy sounding tune.
