There's Good and Bad Falling Satellite News

Posted By on Wed, Oct 19, 2011 at 9:10 AM

First, the bad news: another satellite is going to return to earth sometime around Friday, with the possibility that it will hit somewhere in the United States. The German space agency estimates there's a 1 in 2000 chance that the resulting space debris will hit someone.

The good news? According to Professor Heiner Klinkrad of the European Space Agency "Until now in the more than 50-years of space history not a single person has been harmed [by pieces of falling satellites]." Your individual likelihood of being hit? 1 in 14 trillion? Still, I'm totally using this as an excuse to not do yard work this weekend.
