Democrats: Arizona a "Prime Pick-Up Opportunity"

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee reacts to Sen. Jon Kyl's announcement that he won't seek reelection:

Senator Kyl’s announcement has instantaneously catapulted Arizona to a prime pick-up opportunity for Senate Democrats this cycle. But more broadly, his retirement, Kay Bailey Hutchison's retirement, Jim Talent’s reluctance to run, and the ongoing Republican civil war are four early signals that 2012 will be full of surprises and that Democrats will ultimately do well next November. Republicans now likely face a primary in Arizona, similar to impending free-for-alls in nearly every other state. Time after time, Republicans nominated unelectable candidates — and they look willing to do so again this cycle.

Well, the election is a long ways off and Republicans could succeed in nominating someone that would really turn off independent voters statewide. But as we mentioned earlier, it doesn't look like there's a really strong Democratic bench right now.
